Iranian activist, Shadi Sadr wins Amnesty International award

leave a comment »

Iranian women’s rights activist, Shadi Sadr won Amnesty International’s Golden Butterfly award for the most imposing and inspiring activist at The Movies that Matter Festival.

Shadi Sadr’s human rights activities are depicted in Farid Haerinejad and Mohammad Kazemi’s film Women in Shroud, a documentary that follows the struggles of a number of women’s rights activists and their campaign to stop the harsh law of stoning in Iran.

Shadi Sadr has announced that the reward belongs to all the activists involved in the “Stop Stoning Campaign.”

Ms. Sadr has also announced that she will donate the €5,000 monetary award included in the prize to a project that proposes to document the memoirs of women’s struggles in Iran during the first decade following the 1979 Iranian Revolution.

Sadr maintains that the memoirs of this generation of women have never been recorded and this prize may become a starting point for documenting this portion of women’s history in Iran.

Shadi Sadr, who has been arrested on several occasions by the Iranian authorities, is an Iranian lawyer, activist and former prisoner of conscience and one of the founders of the “Stop Stoning Campaign.”

She was also in charge of a counselling centre for women (RAHI) that has meanwhile been closed by the Iranian government. She has currently developed an action-oriented web site that campaigns for equal rights for women.

In the last year, Shadi Sadr was also the recipient of human rights awards from Dutch and US foreign ministries. Sadr left Iran last September and is currently residing in Germany.

How far would you go?

I saw this video and I thought that I should share it. It has nothing to do with human rights directly but makes one think about civil obedience and moral beliefs. Capital punishment as well.

Rape victims worldwide denied justice and dignity

with one comment

I read this on  Amnesty International’s website and I put it here just in case you guys are interested to keep talking about it.

Women who report rape to the police in the Nordic countries have only a small chance of having their cases tried by a court of law. The result is that many perpetrators are never held to account for their crimes. Amnesty International examines the gaps in the law and legal practices; and calls on the governments of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden to take steps to ensure justice for all victims and survivors of sexual crimes.

leave a comment »

Security agents have arrested human rights activist Keyvan Rafiee’s sister.

HRANA – Security forces raided the home of Keyvan Rafiee’s parents and without presenting a warrant or a single charge, arrested his sister and took her to an unknown location.

According to HRANA, security agents raided the home of activist Keyvan Rafiee’s parents at 10:00 p.m. on March 2nd and arrested his sister. The attack was part of the government’s March 2nd operations that sought to bring an end to the activities of Human Rights Activists in Iran and which have thus far resulted in at least 29 raids on the homes of HRA members and affiliates. Mr. Rafiee is the former executive director of Human Rights Activists in Iran.

According to Mr. Rafiee, his sister is an accounting student with no history of political activism or presence in the human rights arena. The agents who were members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Intelligence units from the cities of Tehran and Gorgan, mentioned Mr. Rafiee’s work while arresting his sister and said that they were left with no choice.

Based on statements from security forces, after her arrest, Ms. Rafiee was taken to the IRGC Intelligence’s detention center in the city of Gorgan and was transferred to Tehran the following day. There is currently no information about her condition after her arrest.

In an interview with HRANA, Keyvan Rafiee expressed his concern about the security establishment’s newly adopted tactics for preventing the activities of activists whom they are unable to arrest. Mr. Rafiee said: “This inhumane act is essentially a kind of hostage taking. These types of actions require the immediate attention of the international community and other defenders of human rights. Although these types of actions will not cause the slightest fracture in our resolve and determination to continue our human rights activities, but undoubtedly, inattention will lead to the deepening and expansion of this illegal and inhuman tactic.”

Human Rights Activists in Iran has described in detail the unprecedented attacks by security organizations on its members an affiliates in an earlier press release
